The chemical manufacturing business has some good news to share. PT Chandra Asri Petrochemical Tbk (Chandra Asri), a petrochemical issuer owned by the conglomerate Prajogo Pangestu, is seeking green chemical business potential with Japanese company NIPPON SHOKUBAI CO., LTD. (NSCL), and its local subsidiary, PT NIPPON SHOKUBAI INDONESIA (NSI).

A memorandum of understanding has been signed to establish this collaboration (23/5/2023). Chandra Asri, NSCL, and their subsidiaries shall collaborate in conducting exploration about the utilization of renewable energy sources for the production of diverse “bio” chemical raw materials, including bio-naphtha, bio-olefins, and other products, to manufacture sustainable derivatives including acrylic acid (AA), acrylic ester (AES), and superabsorbent polymer (SAP) in the future.

President Director of Chandra Asri, Erwin Ciputra, stated that his party enthusiastically supported the opportunity of Chandra Asri and Nippon Shokubai Group to collaborate on the production of environmentally friendly raw materials for the chemical industry in Indonesia, which is expanding at a rapid pace. In addition, he stated that Chandra Asri is committed to enhancing processes, products, and raw material utilization in an environmentally friendly manner to guarantee energy savings, carbon optimization, and the implementation of a green-oriented future.

In addition, studies will also be carried out to assess the potential of establishing a new environmentally sustainable supply chain and manufacturing bio-raw materials at the Chandra Asri and NSI facilities located in Cilegon, West Java. Additionally, both parties aim to optimize the organization’s technology, asset footprint, and fundamental competencies. This partnership with Nippon Shokubai Group is expected to fulfil the demand for environmentally sustainable bio-chemical derivative products on the domestic market, including green plastic with reduced emissions. This partnership aims to contribute to Indonesia’s climate resilience and long-term strategy to reduce carbon emissions by 2050.

Nippon Shokubai Group had developed a global-level supply system for SAP in advance. Otherwise, SAP has been used in the manufacturing of disposable diapers made from AA which is synthetically derived from propylene supplied by Chandra Asri.
